Press Conference by the Media Council of Somalia

PRESS RELEASE

Mogadishu, 08 April 2024: the Media Council of Somalia (MCS) has today convened a press conference in Mogadishu Somalia. The objectives of the press conference has been to brief the Media, the Public and the Government and update them on the progress the Council has made on its responsibilities since the approval by the cabinet mid-March 2024. After deliberations, the Media Council of Somalia (MCS) has issued the following:

1.    The Council shows its appreciation to the cabinet of the Federal Government of Somalia which unanimously approves the council on 14th of March 2024.

2.    To give full report of the Council.

3.    The Council calls on Somali Journalists to contact the Council if they have any complaint regarding their work in accordance with the Media Law. The Council also informs the Somali people to contact the council for their complaints against the Somali Media. As the Council will be the authority regulating Somali Media, it will act as mediator and arbitrate between the media and others or within the media.

4.    The Council calls on the Somali Journalists and the Media Houses to register with the Council.

5.    The Council appreciates the difficulty circumstances under which Somali Journalists have been working and reassures the Media and Journalists that the Somali Media Law and the Council are committed to protecting the interests and the future well-being of Journalism in Somalia.

6.    Finally, the Council highlights the importance of adapting Somali Media Law which was approved in 2020.

7.    The Council on building the capacity of Somali Media to work in accordance with their human rights in terms of Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalism.
